Valentine Sweet Sale

These mini Valentine cookies will be for sale!

It's time again for the Valentine Sweet Sale to benefit Trinity Episcopal Cathedral's Food Ministries which supports The Wednesday Community Meal. The annual sale is one of Food Ministries' largest fundraisers but last year's sale sadly had to be cancelled because of icy winter weather. We're hoping to make up for it this year and sell out.

I've been busy making cookies and my friends and cohorts Cheryl and Dave Richardson have been busy making Belgian chocolate truffles. All of the sweets will be beautifully packaged and ready to give to your loved ones.

Here are the details:

Valentine Sweet Sale to Benefit Food Ministries
Sunday February 8, 9 a.m. to noon in Kempton Hall at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (147 NW 19th Avenue, Portland, Oregon). Buy Belgian chocolate truffles and cookies for all your loved ones and at the same time support Trinity’s Food Ministries. The sweets are handmade by chocolatiers and bakers from The Wednesday Community Meal and will be beautifully packaged and ready to give.

Pie Fundraiser

Just-baked cherry and apple pies.

I've been busy baking an assortment of homemade pies with my friends for a fundraiser at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral this Sunday, June 1, after the 10 a.m. service. Here are a few pictures from yesterday's busy baking session and the details about the fundraiser that benefits Food Ministries which supports The Wednesday Community Meal. I hope to see you there.

Please join us for a slice of homemade pie and at the same time enjoy fellowship and help support Outreach Ministries. There will be a variety of fruit pies from apple to strawberry rhubarb and cream pies from chocolate to lemon meringue to choose from and will cost $3 a slice. If you prefer your pie with a side of vanilla ice cream, don't worry, we'll provide that too. Raffle tickets will also be available for a chance to win a whole pie of your choice to take home. Proceeds from this sale will go to our hungry friends in our Food Ministries.

Apples, strawberries, cherries, rhubarb and peaches ready to be turned into pie fillings. Besides double-crusted fruit pies, we will offer slices of cream pies at the fundraiser.

Nirvana Cookies

For an upcoming Alternative Liturgy at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, I made these fun sugar cookies decorated like the famous Nirvana Logo that was drawn by Kurt Cobain.

The upcoming liturgy features the music of Pearl Jam and Nirvana and is a fundraiser for the Wednesday Community Meal.  Everyone is invited.

Here are the liturgy details:

Something in the Way: The Pearl Jam and Nirvana Alternative Liturgy
Saturday, March 16, 6 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
Kempton Hall
147 NW 19th Ave.
Portland, OR

Come as you are to an alternative Lenten liturgy featuring the music of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Two of the most popular and critically-acclaimed rock bands of the past 20 years, their powerful, poetic and often raw songs reflect the internal, external, and metaphysical obstacles we face as humans walking through the postmodern world.
Free.
The free-will offering benefits The Wednesday Community Meal at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

Now for the cookies - only two colors of icing (black and bright yellow) are needed. The best part of making these cookies is that Kurt Cobain designed the face with imperfect lines so you don't need to stress over keeping a steady hand.

With a #2 pastry tip and piping consistency yellow icing, outline the cookie.

Put your yellow icing in a sealed sandwich bag so that it doesn't dry out before you need it again for the last step.
Fill the cookies with flood consistency black icing and a #2 pastry tip. Use a skewer to gently ease the icing to the edges.
Let the cookies dry for 30 minutes and then add the face details with your yellow icing and a #2 tip. Start off by making two "x" marks for eyes. Then, make the mouth and add the tongue.
